Research Community

In order to ensure that the OMOP initiative is both efficient and collaborative, research will be conducted through a two-tiered approach. While the Research Core, comprised of a set of research institutions chosen through a competitive process, will design and manage a core set of experiments, the partnership will also encourage the participation of the broader scientific community, through its Extended Consortium.

The Extended Consortium will allow researchers who are outside the Research Core to conduct complementary research on their own databases and publish their findings. The Research Core will make available, as soon as possible, all of its research materials through this web site and peer-reviewed publications, including protocols, data models, database evaluation and quality-assurance tools, analytical programs and findings.

OMOP will encourage this sharing of tools and results to maximize the public benefit. External institutions whose aims are in alignment with OMOP’s; that can credibly and objectively perform relevant research; and that are willing to share tools, approaches, findings, and other intellectual property developed as a result may be recognized as members of the Extended Research Consortium.

Consortium members may benefit from participation through joint publications, cross-citations, and invitation to an annual Research Symposium, sponsored by OMOP. OMOP will seek input from the scientific community and Consortium members themselves on its structure and operation on an ongoing basis.
